Milfontes & the Beach
Vila Nova de Milfontes is one of the oldest parishes in the municipality of Odemira and one of the prettiest - so much so it has long been dubbed “ A Princesa do Alentejo” (the Princess of Alentejo).
It’s a charming town surrounded by rugged wild cliffs, beautiful long sandy beaches, with an amazing fauna and flora. Its privileged location right in the Southwest Alentejo and the Vicentina Coast Natural Park, means Vila Nova de Milfontes can offer its visitors a fantastic array of activities and experiences: from surfing to fishing, canoeing, hiking, cycling, horse riding, amongst many others.
It has an interesting background linked to piracy and privateering and a great claim to the country’s history: the first flight between Portugal and Macau took off from just the outskirts of the town ( a remembrance monument to this achievement and its pilots can be seen in the Barbacã square, near the fort).
There are quite a few shops, restaurants and bars as well as a cinema. With a mild and sunny climate, good food, inexpensive drinks and the great hotel locations and deals the Duna Parque Hotel Group has to offer you, Vila Nova de Milfontes is a perfect holiday spot at any time of the year.
Must-sees and must-dos: a day at the beach, a boat trip up river and a walk up the hill which provides the most stunning views of the valley and the sea. In the old quarter the spots to visit are the fort of St.Clement, the Barbacã square, the main church and the chapel of S. Sebastian.
Elected one of Portugal's Seven Beach Wonders in 2013, Furnas beach is located on the south bank of the river Mira - you can reach it by going over the bridge or by taking a boat across the river. It’s a long sandy beach, ideal for long walks by the water. It offers fantastic views of the Farol and Franquia beaches and on its river front a great panoramic view of the village.
Farol beach is one of the main beaches in Vila Nova de Milfontes. Located right after Franquia beach - there is a natural pier which allows easy passage between the two, tide permitting. This beach enjoys both a river front and a sea front. When the tide is low, there are lots of natural pools where children can safely play in. It's also very popular with watersports lovers.
Franquia is the closest beach to the village. Being a river beach means that it has calm waters with very few waves, making it popular with families with young children. Great for watersports, especially canoeing and windwsurfing.
Malhão is a beautiful wild, sandy beach, located about 5 kms north of Vila Nova de Milfontes. Its access is mostly off road and there are at present no facilities; but for many this is exactly what makes this beach so attractive. Great for surfing and bodyboard. This is a must go to beach.
